Women

I loved the lost ones
the loose ones
the ones who’d lose themselves in me
the nonredeemable ones
the hungry
the ones whose hunger needed sating
the ones who surrended to the lights of the nights
the ones to whom the night had surrended
the innocent ones
the ignorant ones
the ones who lived to show life to a dead world.

They let men get near them
usually nearer than they should

They brought boys to the light
and pretty girls into womanhood

In the flesh, they mothered you
then fresh springs smothered you
A new man, you’d come out of it
In the spirit, a changed man.
